Procrastinate On: A Series…Get Out of There, Plath!

Welcome to a new series here on Smith’d, where we your faithful writers, review the many Smith-related blogs available to you on the interwebz. Our inaugural review could deal with one famous Smithie and one famous Smithie only.

Sylvia Plath, why are you in the world of Harry Potter? Don’t you have your own literary work to attend to?

from ~~Anonymous~~

brought to you by some mysterious Smithie alums (Smith’d loves you!)

what the actual fuck?: It’s a pretty simple concept. Smith’s own Sylvia Plath appears in places that she does not belong.

why should I use this to procrastinate?: Because, you see, it’s fucking hilarious. You can submit your own pictures of our Precious Plath spotted where she shouldn’t be. The alums that run the blog update it pretty frequently, so there’s plenty of Plath to keep you entertained. Plus, you can justify obsessively checking it, because the blog is relevant to you as a Smithie  as it concerns a famous alum. So it’s not really technically procrastinating. Right? We thought so.

my favorite post: this one.

rating: 4 out of 5 bell jars

Go check it out, darlings.

Have a Smith-related blog (besides Smith’d, obviously…) that you love to stalk? Let Smith’d know so we can review it and pass it on.

It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Week: The Weekly Best of Smith Confessional

Hey Smithies! Hope your fall breaks were as orgasmic as you said they would be. Even if your break sadly did not live up to its thigh-trembling expectations, welcome back. Hopefully, you managed to burn off that pre-mid terms stress somehow.

Here is The Weekly Best of Smith Confessional: The October 10th Edition

Flawless responses, 1-6. Absolutely flawless.

I’ve personally struggled with the answer this question inside and outside of Smith’s classrooms, and I’ve failed to come up with anything as fitting as “That Bro.” It’s a relief to see that Smithies have worked together productively in reaching a conclusion on the pressing issue of what to call a “That Guy.”

Keep up the great work, Smith Confessional!

P.S.: A link to the Smith Confessional can be found under the  Procrastinate on, Smithies! section to your right. Just so you don’t have to keep on searching for it. You’re welcome.

Any Smithies still on campus? Don’t you worry, Smith’d hasn’t forgotten about you!

Directed by Sam Rush

From Carissa Dagenais, ’13

brought to you by: New Century Theatre

about the production: NCT is proud to produce the Valley premier of this 2010 Tony award winning play that the NY Times called “Intense and exciting…a study in artist appreciation, a portrait of an angry and brilliant mind that asks you to feel the shape and texture of thoughts…” RED is set in the 1958 art studio of renowned abstract expressionist painter Mark Rothko. Commissioned to create a series of murals for the famed Four Seasons restaurant, Rothko struggles to complete them while dealing with the ever increasing questioning of his young assistant. Forced to examine his motives for creation, his place in the pantheon of great artists and the decline of his talent, Rothko finds himself in an agonizing battle of self worth and relevance. RED is a luminous, electrifying and powerful play of soaring ideas and raw passion that can’t be missed.

A Summer in the Theater: Circle Mirror Transformation by Annie Baker

From Carissa Dagenais, ’13

brought to you by: New Century Theatre

about the production: Directed by Ellen Kaplan, winner of the 2010 Obie Award for Best New American Play, and nominee for a Drama Desk award, CIRCLE MIRROR TRANSFORMATION is a gently hilarious play about small, life changing moments found in the unlikeliest of places. It is the story of four adults who sign up for a six-week acting class at their local community center. Led by an earnest and enthusiastic instructor, the students use theatre games and exercises to slowly and awkwardly strip away their defenses and reveal their inner selves to their classmates. Hopes and dreams are shared, hearts are quietly torn apart, new bonds form and, ultimately, each student leaves with a renewed faith in themselves and their fellow classmates. The New York Times says, “Annie Baker’s play is an absolute feast. CIRCLE MIRROR TRANSFORMATION is the kind of unheralded gem that sends people into the streets babbling and bright-eyed with the desire to spread the word.”

when: June 14-23Tue.-Thurs. 7:30pm, Fri. & Sat. 8:00pm, Sun 2:00pm & 7:30pm

where: Mendenhall Center for the Performing Arts, Smith College

UPDATE: An Open Letter to the Smith Community

Dear Members of the Smith Community,

I write to tell you that, as of yesterday, the investigation and judicial process regarding the anonymous notes in Parsons House has come to a conclusion. Because of college policies on confidentiality, as well as federal legislation on right to privacy, I am not able to offer specific information. However, I want you to know that a student was brought before the Community Judicial Board, a JB process convened to adjudicate bias incidents whose membership includes students, faculty and staff. The Board, which met during finals week after all elements of the investigation were complete, carefully weighed the evidence and found the student responsible. The disciplinary action recommended by the Board has been taken.

I hope this will help to bring some closure to one aspect of the difficult events of the spring.

Sincerely,

Carol T. Christ

Smithies, what do we think?
