A Summer in the Theater: Circle Mirror Transformation by Annie Baker

From Carissa Dagenais, ’13

brought to you by: New Century Theatre

about the production: Directed by Ellen Kaplan, winner of the 2010 Obie Award for Best New American Play, and nominee for a Drama Desk award, CIRCLE MIRROR TRANSFORMATION is a gently hilarious play about small, life changing moments found in the unlikeliest of places. It is the story of four adults who sign up for a six-week acting class at their local community center. Led by an earnest and enthusiastic instructor, the students use theatre games and exercises to slowly and awkwardly strip away their defenses and reveal their inner selves to their classmates. Hopes and dreams are shared, hearts are quietly torn apart, new bonds form and, ultimately, each student leaves with a renewed faith in themselves and their fellow classmates. The New York Times says, “Annie Baker’s play is an absolute feast. CIRCLE MIRROR TRANSFORMATION is the kind of unheralded gem that sends people into the streets babbling and bright-eyed with the desire to spread the word.”
